The Delta Police Department have arrested and charged an 18 year old male with first degree murder of 15-year old Laura Szendrei. Laura was viciously attacked on Sept. 25th as she walked through Mackie Park to meet with friends.

The suspect, who was taken into custody without incident, can not be named as he was 17 when the attack took place. He will appear in court today in Surrey. He is described as a Caucasian male, putting to rest a rumour that the assailant was South Asian.

The DPD's spokewoman Sgt. Sharlene Brooks could not say what motivated the attack or even if the suspect knew Laura. It is still unclear whether this incident was targeted or random. She speculated that this was a crime of opportunity.

Laura's parents, Mike and Rachel, were on hand at the conference. A tearful father expressed his doubts that Laura's attacker would be brought to justice and thanked everyone for their work.

Throughout this ordeal the Szendreis have remained very private and the reiterated their request to the media to respect their privacy.

A community Walk, Run, Roll event organized by the Laura Szendrei Memorial Scholarship Foundation is scheduled to take place on April 10th starting from Burnsview School to raise money for two scholarships to be awarded to Delta Secondary students in Laura's name.

Laura would be 16-years old this April
